Anthony Hopkins’s Life Is a Dream finds a classical audience
Gustavo Dudamel leads the Philharmonia in the actor-composer’s latest album.

Anthony Hopkins’s Life Is a Dream topped the UK’s Official Classical Artist Albums chart for 28 August–3 September 2026, drawing attention to a musical career that has developed alongside his screen work. Decca released the album on 21 August; the achievement should not be confused with a new number-one placing in October.
Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra, with contributions from pianist Sergio Tiempo, cellist Gregorio Nieto, the Bach Choir and choristers from Winchester Cathedral. The recording brings orchestral, choral and solo forces to music assembled from several periods of Hopkins’s life.
Its titles include Bracken Road, My Fatherland, And the Waltz Goes On and the 1947 Suite. Childhood memories and a long-standing interest in melody provide a personal frame for the collection, while the performers give those ideas a substantial concert-music setting.
Hopkins has described music as an early ambition, and the new release should not be mistaken for his first venture into classical recording. His earlier album Composer appeared in 2012. Life Is a Dream instead represents another stage in an established, if less publicly prominent, part of his creative work.
The distinction is more than a matter of discography. Treating every musical project by a famous actor as a novelty can obscure the continuity of the work itself. Here, the interest lies in how recurring musical ideas have been developed and presented by an experienced performing team.
Chart success measures the album’s reach rather than settling questions of artistic value. Those remain for listeners to consider in the music: the shape of a melody, the use of orchestral colour and the coherence of the programme.
For now, the release has achieved something concrete. It has brought Hopkins’s composing back into the public conversation, with Dudamel and the Philharmonia providing the principal musical platform.
