BBC Radio 3 reached an average of 1.962 million listeners a week in the third quarter of 2026, an increase of 8.6 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier. The figures put the classical network close to the two-million mark during a quarter that included the Proms season.

Radio 3 Breakfast attracted 805,000 weekly listeners, while the separate Radio 3 Unwind service recorded a reach of 382,000. Together, the results show audiences engaging with classical music through both an established broadcast schedule and a more specialised listening offer.

The figures sit within a broader picture of radio’s continuing reach in Britain. Across the industry, weekly listening stood at 51.183 million adults, or 86.7 per cent of the adult population. Digital platforms accounted for 76 per cent of listening hours.

For the BBC as a whole, radio services reached about 31 million people each week and held a 41.9 per cent share of listening. Those totals provide context, but Radio 3’s year-on-year gain is the more directly relevant result for classical music organisations assessing the visibility of the art form.

The quarter’s timing makes the Proms an important part of the programming background. It does not, by itself, establish how much of the audience increase was caused by the festival rather than other programmes or changes in listening habits.

A similar distinction applies to digital statistics. BBC Sounds reported substantially higher listening hours, but a measurement change improving the capture of listening through Alexa contributed to that increase. It should not be read simply as equivalent growth in audience demand.

For Radio 3, the headline remains a measurable expansion in weekly reach. The next question is whether that momentum can be sustained beyond the summer’s concentrated concert activity and across the network’s year-round schedule.
