The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden has announced a 2027 programme that places Beethoven at the centre of its Easter Festival while keeping opera prominent throughout the year. A new Fidelio and the Missa solemnis mark the bicentenary of the composer’s death. Wagner, Bizet and Mozart appear in later seasonal festivals, giving audiences several reasons to revisit the venue.

Joana Mallwitz is due to conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a Fidelio staged by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Klaus Mäkelä and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are scheduled for the Missa solemnis. The pairing puts Beethoven’s only opera beside one of his most demanding sacred scores. Both use voices and orchestra on a large scale, but they ask different questions of drama, faith and collective expression.

The rest of the calendar widens the view. Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman is planned for Pentecost and Bizet’s Carmen for autumn. At the winter festival, Iván Fischer is set to stage and conduct Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The festival structure gives each title its own context rather than presenting a continuous run of unrelated productions.

Anniversary programming can become a list of obligatory tributes. Baden-Baden’s more interesting challenge is to make audiences hear Beethoven anew through contrasting works and interpreters. A production of Fidelio lives or fails by its theatrical urgency; the Missa solemnis demands concentration on a very different scale. Famous names alone cannot provide that experience.

For visitors planning a trip, the announcement offers a long view of the year. For the theatre, it creates a test of coherence across seasons: whether a strong Easter focus can sit naturally within a calendar that also gives space to Wagnerian, French and Mozartian opera.
