Berlin Staatsoper Secures Leadership Team Through 2034
Berlin commits to artistic continuity.

Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden has extended the contracts of artistic director Elisabeth Sobotka and general music director Christian Thielemann until July 31, 2034, securing the partnership that has led the company since September 2024.
The decision gives one of Germany’s principal opera houses a long planning horizon for its stage productions and concert programmes. The trustees of the Stiftung Oper in Berlin approved the extensions on October 8, with the contracts formally signed on October 14.
Berlin’s culture senator Stefan Evers welcomed the agreement as a means of retaining two internationally recognised artistic figures whose work contributes to the capital’s cultural standing.
Sobotka described the renewal as an opportunity to build on the trust established during the partnership’s opening seasons. Thielemann likewise emphasised the positive artistic and personal relationship he has developed with both Sobotka and the Staatskapelle Berlin.
Their continued leadership will combine the cultivation of established repertoire with the exploration of further musical territory. Thielemann said the breadth of music already covered provided a strong foundation for that work.
The extensions represent a substantial commitment to the current team, allowing the Staatsoper to develop its artistic direction over successive seasons while maintaining continuity across its opera and orchestral activities.
