Bologna Promotes Pierangelo Conte as Its Homecoming Approaches
The artistic director takes overall charge of the Teatro Comunale.

Bologna’s Teatro Comunale has chosen continuity at a moment of transition. Pierangelo Conte, already its artistic director, has been appointed superintendent, combining artistic leadership with overall responsibility for the institution.
The appointment was confirmed on 27 October following the departure of Elisabetta Riva for personal reasons. Conte had worked with her on the 2026 and 2027 programmes, so the change places an existing member of the leadership team in charge rather than introducing an unfamiliar artistic agenda.
An immediate priority is the planned return to the historic theatre in Piazza Verdi on 14 February 2027. The reopening gives the appointment an operational dimension as well as an artistic one: a programme must be delivered while the institution prepares to resume work in its established home.
Born in Treviso in 1967, Conte brings experience from several major Italian opera organisations. He served as artistic secretary at Venice’s La Fenice from 2005 to 2014, then as artistic coordinator at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino until 2021. He subsequently led artistic planning at Genoa’s Teatro Carlo Felice before moving to Bologna in 2025.
His background also includes composition, choral music and choral conducting studies. That combination of musical training and administrative experience helps explain the decision to extend his existing remit.
Conte has described an ambition for the Comunale to be active throughout the year, with discussion, books and exhibitions accompanying performances. This remains a vision for the institution rather than a confirmed promise that every day will carry a public event.
The change therefore connects two forms of continuity: programmes already prepared with Riva, and a longer history embodied by the restored theatre. Conte’s new task is to carry both into a working institution whose artistic decisions and overall management now meet in the same office.
