Brigitte Fassbaender Named Faust Lifetime Achievement Honouree
Brigitte Fassbaender will receive a lifetime achievement award

Brigitte Fassbaender has been named the recipient of the 2026 Der Faust lifetime achievement award, recognising her contributions to opera as a singer, director, teacher and theatre leader.
The German Stage Association announced the honour on October 6. The award is scheduled to be presented at a gala at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden on November 14.
The jury highlighted Fassbaender’s distinctive artistic personality and her command of the major roles in the mezzo-soprano repertoire. It also recognised the career she developed in opera directing after concluding her active singing career in 1995.
Born in Berlin in 1939, Fassbaender joined the Bavarian State Opera in 1961 and subsequently performed on major international stages. She served as opera director in Braunschweig from 1995 to 1997 and led the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck from 1999 to 2012.
The announcement described her transition into directing and institutional leadership as an example for women entering professions then heavily dominated by men.
Supporting younger artists remains another important part of her work. Fassbaender teaches international masterclasses and continues to be sought after as an opera director.
The honour reflects a career whose influence extends from performance to the development of artists and institutions.
