Christian Spuck Extends Berlin Ballet Leadership to 2033
Contract renewal extends his tenure through July 2033.

Christian Spuck will remain at the head of Staatsballett Berlin until 31 July 2033 after the board of Stiftung Oper in Berlin approved an extension to his contract.
The decision was taken on 8 October. His previous agreement ran until July 2028, so the renewal adds five years to the existing term and gives the company a longer planning horizon under his direction.
Spuck began the Berlin appointment on 1 August 2023, following more than a decade leading Ballett Zürich. His move brought a choreographer with an extensive record of narrative work to Germany’s capital.
Born in Marburg and trained at Stuttgart’s John Cranko School, he has developed a repertoire that includes adaptations of major literary works as well as productions shaped around concert music.
His Anna Karenina, created in 2014, subsequently travelled to companies in Norway, Russia, South Korea and Germany. Winterreise, made in Zurich in 2018, received a Benois de la Danse award the following year.
In Berlin, Bovary was among the productions of his first season, continuing his engagement with literature as a starting point for dance. The contract extension comes in the year in which he received the German Dance Prize.
For a ballet company, a leadership agreement extending several seasons ahead provides a framework for developing repertoire, scheduling new productions and maintaining artistic relationships. It does not in itself specify the works that will fill those seasons, but it establishes who will shape their direction.
The renewed term allows Spuck to build beyond the initial phase of his Berlin tenure. Having arrived in 2023, he now has a mandate stretching across a full decade from that starting point.
The decision places continuity at the centre of the company’s next stage, with programming details for the later years still to emerge.
