Deborah Rutter Rejects “Malicious” Claims by Trump-Appointed Kennedy Center Leader

Former Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter has strongly denied accusations of financial mismanagement made by Trump appointee Richard Grenell, calling them “a malicious attempt to distort the facts.” Rutter, who led the institution from 2014 to early 2025, was dismissed earlier this year.

In a public statement, Rutter defended her tenure, citing board-approved budgets, transparent audits, and the creation of a $10 million Sustainability Fund. “The Kennedy Center was fiscally sound when I left,” she wrote, warning that current leadership may be deflecting blame for new financial challenges.

She criticised the current team for lacking understanding of nonprofit arts management and expressed concern over the broader harm such false narratives cause to artists and institutions. Requests by media outlets to access documents supporting the allegations have reportedly been denied.
