Deutsches Theater Göttingen to be renovated for around 152 million pounds

The aging Deutsches Theater Göttingen will be renovated for 152 million pounds. Built in 1890, the theater will be updated for contemporary operations. The project will take four years after the architectural competition, which will last about a year. The costs include a 20% buffer for material price increases and unforeseen investments, plus 6.1 million pounds for a temporary venue. The city, Lower Saxony, and the federal government will share the costs.

The historic theater needs significant renovation due to outdated facilities, inadequate space, accessibility issues, and fire safety concerns. Mayor Petra Broistedt called the renovation an essential project for Göttingen, while Cultural Affairs Head Anja Krause emphasized the theater's central role in the region's cultural identity.
