During the restoration of the Mariinsky Theatre's Historic Stage, the theatre will relocate to a new building.

St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov and Valery Gergiev, the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre, have agreed to form a joint working group. This group will develop a concept for the use of the former Record cinema building, which will serve as an alternative venue for the theatre during the restoration period. The press service of the Smolny reported this development.

"Today, Governor Alexander Beglov held a working meeting with Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director and Director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theatre. During the meeting, they agreed to establish a joint working group to develop a concept for the building's use to meet the theatre's needs," the report stated.

In December 2023, the historic building on Lermontovsky Prospekt, which has housed three different cinemas and the Theatre of Miniatures over the years, will be handed over to the Mariinsky Theatre.

About the new building: The cultural heritage site, known as "Дом Ш. З. Иоффа с кинематографом (The House of Sh. Z. Ioff with Cinematograph)," is located at 14 Lermontovsky Prospekt, lit. A. The original 19th-century building on this site was rebuilt in 1916 to accommodate the Theatre of Miniatures, which was later closed after 1917. From 1923, the building housed the NewStar cinema, which was renamed Udarnik before the war and later became the Record cinema after the Great Patriotic War. In 2001, the building was added to the list of cultural heritage objects. Currently, it is not in use.
