Gasteig Opens Public Auction as Renovation Preparations Accelerate
Munich puts cultural memories up for auction.

Munich’s Gasteig is offering members of the public the chance to acquire pieces of the cultural centre as preparations for its comprehensive renovation gather pace.
An online auction beginning on October 15 will feature surplus furnishings and equipment, with opening bids starting at €1. A separate live auction planned for November will offer selected objects associated with the building’s history, including seating and lighting. Profits will return to the renovation project.
The sales form part of a wider reuse programme overseen by the municipal development company MRG. Before anything is offered to buyers, materials and fixtures are being assessed for continued use within the renovated Gasteig or in other city projects.
Plans include recovering bricks for treatment and later reuse, refurbishing some seats, and retaining handrails. The Philharmonie’s large organ will be carefully dismantled and subsequently reinstalled.
MRG says approximately 80 per cent of the existing building fabric will be preserved, avoiding an estimated 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The clearance covers a complex exceeding 90,000 square metres. Building systems are being dismantled and utility connections shut down as the site moves towards construction.
For concertgoers and other regular visitors, the auctions offer a tangible connection to the old Gasteig while helping give its contents a second life.
