The Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne has appointed Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo as Artistic Partner, starting September 2025 for five seasons. Oramo will lead at least two subscription projects annually, introducing new repertoire and collaborating closely with incoming Gürzenich-Kapellmeister Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
Oramo first debuted with the orchestra in 2023 and will return in 2025 to conduct three programmes, including works by Sibelius, Saariaho, and Dvořák, as well as Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. He will also lead a Japan tour in February 2025.
The orchestra’s management and musicians praised Oramo for his programming vision, connection with the ensemble, and commitment to exploring new formats and premieres, especially of Nordic composers. The partnership aims to expand the orchestra's repertoire and engage audiences with innovative projects and opera performances. Oramo expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the orchestra’s tradition, flexibility, and cultural commitment.
