Hfmt Hamburg Adopts Voluntary Commitment To Prevent Abuse Of Power In The Classroom

In October 2024, the executive board and university senate of the Hamburg University of Music and Theater (HfMT) unanimously adopted a voluntary commitment to prevent abuse of power in the classroom. This decision follows a March 2024 survey by a student initiative that revealed cases of abuse at music colleges in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The initiative later participated in the Rectors' Conference of German Music Universities (RKM), where rectors discussed preventive measures and issued recommendations on addressing abuse of power.

The HfMT emphasizes respect among students, teachers, and staff to foster a university environment free from abuse and discrimination. In response, the university management has closely examined the issue and engaged with various groups to identify structures that could facilitate abuse. The resulting self-commitment provides a written reference for all members, especially students, should they encounter any form of abuse.

Prof. Dr. Jan Philipp Sprick, President of HfMT, stated, “This voluntary commitment provides an important impetus for the necessary cultural change and serves as a clear statement of the university's leadership. Continuing the dialogue with teachers and students is vital to prevent abuse of power, and this commitment forms a crucial foundation for that effort.”
