Hiccup Over New Opera House in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf plans to build a new opera house and demolish the old one, but the decision faces increasing criticism. The city council's scheduled vote on a new building at Stadtpark on Thursday is now uncertain. The Rheinische Post reports that the city is reconsidering, favoring a site at Wehrhahn instead, involving a plot from the Signa Group's insolvency estate.

The Rhineland Regional Council's Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments opposes demolishing the current opera house, advocating for historical preservation. However, their objection holds little sway over the final decision.

Controversy surrounds the project within the black-green council majority, with the Greens expressing doubts and the SPD calling for a pause. Public concerns have also arisen about the new opera house's proposed size, double that of the current building. Additionally, the Düsseldorf tree protection group has gathered 15,400 signatures against constructing the new building in Hofgarten.

Within the theatre, specifics of the new building are being considered. Conductor Axel Kober emphasizes the need for adequate facilities for the orchestra, including rehearsal and practice rooms. Musicians currently face logistical challenges, such as insufficient lifts for transporting instruments.
