Italy Awards Gianandrea Noseda the Rank of Grand Officer
The honour will be presented in Zurich.

Gianandrea Noseda is to receive the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, recognising an international conducting career that spans opera houses, symphony orchestras and youth training.
The presentation is scheduled for 7 November following an orchestral concert at Zurich Opera House. Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, Luca Sabbatucci, will confer the distinction, placing the ceremony at one of the institutions where Noseda holds a principal artistic role.
The Milan-born conductor, 62, has been general music director of Zurich Opera since the 2021–22 season. He is also music director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington and principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, maintaining responsibilities across three different musical settings.
The new rank follows his earlier appointment as a Cavaliere in 2001. It is a state honour rather than a conducting competition or a newly announced artistic appointment, and does not change the terms of his existing posts.
Noseda’s work also includes the Tsinandali Festival and the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra, a project established in 2019. That involvement places young orchestral musicians alongside the professional ensembles most closely associated with his public profile, extending his activities into a region where musical collaboration brings performers from different national backgrounds together.
Previous professional recognition includes Musical America’s conductor-of-the-year award for 2015 and the corresponding honour at the International Opera Awards in 2016. The Italian distinction adds a national civic recognition to those assessments within the music profession.
Holding the presentation after a concert gives the honour a direct connection with Noseda’s day-to-day work. For Zurich audiences, it will follow an evening of orchestral performance; for the conductor, it acknowledges a career developed through sustained institutional commitments as well as individual guest appearances. The ceremony remains scheduled for 7 November, rather than an event that has already taken place.
