Langrée’s Second Term Begins Beyond the Salle Favart
The Opéra-Comique director remains in post until 2029.

Louis Langrée has been renewed as director of Paris’s Opéra-Comique until 2029, giving the conductor a second term at an institution whose immediate future includes a season away from its historic home.
Langrée arrived in 2021, succeeding Olivier Mantei when the latter moved to the Philharmonie de Paris. The new three-year mandate confirms continuity of artistic leadership as work on the Salle Favart sends programming into other venues. The plans extend beyond Paris, making partnerships elsewhere in France and internationally part of the next phase.
The theatre’s account of the first term emphasises co-productions, contemporary commissions and educational development. It points to at least one new creation per season, the establishment of Campus Favart and the expansion of the Maîtrise populaire. Sponsorship income has tripled, according to the institution, which describes its financial position as having been stabilised over three financial years.
Those are institutional assessments rather than a guarantee that the next period will be straightforward. A building closure changes practical relationships with audiences, artists and partner venues. It also gives an opera house a reason to reach people who may not normally enter its principal auditorium.
The renewal is framed around the continuing Projet Favart, bringing heritage and new work into contact with different disciplines and generations. The theatre intends to involve younger creators and deepen cooperation with French and European opera organisations.
For audiences, the most immediate consequence is geographical: following the Opéra-Comique will temporarily mean following it beyond the Salle Favart. For Langrée, the second term offers an opportunity to turn that displacement into an artistic programme. The test will be how successfully the partnerships developed during the works become part of the institution’s continuing life when its home reopens.
