Leipzig: Women in the museum

Leipzig's music museums are dedicating a themed year to women in the music scene. Under the motto ‘Strong!’, they are turning the spotlight on women from 31 May. These museums are the Mendelssohn House, the Bach Museum, the Schumann House, the City History Museum, the Grieg Meeting Centre and the Musical Instrument Museum at Leipzig University. Whether Mendelssohn's wife Cécile, singer Livia Frege, Clara Schumann or the women of the Bach family - the music city of Leipzig was characterised by highly interesting women who also wrote European music history.

The theme year will be officially opened today, Friday, at the Mendelssohn House. The new cabinet exhibition on ‘The Unknown Beauty’, Cécile Jeanrenaud, the wife of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, will be on display for the first time. In addition to her frequently praised beauty, her singing and drawing talents and her gentle disposition, she apparently created the perfect family and social environment for the composer, conductor and piano virtuoso.
