Mantei’s Paris Renewal Puts Audience Development in Focus
The Philharmonie’s director will continue until 2029.

Olivier Mantei will remain at the head of the Cité de la musique–Philharmonie de Paris until 2029. His renewed mandate extends a tenure that began in 2021 and places education and wider access alongside the institution’s concert programme.
The Philharmonie’s assessment of his first term highlights an audience milestone: approximately 1.6 million visits in 2025. Children, families and young people accounted for 42 per cent of total attendance. These figures describe the institution’s broader activity, not simply ticket sales for orchestral concerts, and should be read in that context.
Mantei succeeded Laurent Bayle, who oversaw the opening of the new concert hall. His own background combines ensemble management and theatre. Before moving to the Philharmonie, he led the Opéra-Comique; earlier work included the Accentus ensemble and collaboration with Peter Brook at the Bouffes du Nord.
For the next term, the priorities include expanding educational provision, reaching more varied audiences and responding to social, environmental and digital change. The symphonic programme remains central, with the Orchestre de Paris and music director Klaus Mäkelä prominent in the institution’s artistic identity.
The challenge is to make these ambitions reinforce one another. Family activities, learning programmes and major concerts can offer different entry points into the same organisation, but a high visitor count alone does not explain whether people return or develop a lasting relationship with its music.
The renewal gives Mantei three more years to advance that relationship. It also preserves leadership continuity at a venue whose responsibilities range from performance to education and musical heritage. The announcement is therefore about more than retaining a director: it confirms a model in which the concert hall is one part of a larger public institution.
