Markus Poschner to Become Chief Conductor of RSO Vienna

Markus Poschner is expected to assume the position of Chief Conductor of the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO) in 2026, as reported by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) on Tuesday. However, this appointment depends on securing the orchestra’s existence and financial stability. ORF Radio Director Ingrid Thurner expressed her deep appreciation that the 54-year-old conductor agreed to this commitment despite the orchestra’s uncertain future.

Poschner emphasized his longstanding close connection with RSO Vienna, recalling many unforgettable musical moments shared with the orchestra. Each collaboration, he said, has left him in awe of the musicians’ quality, dedication, passion, and artistry. “I hope and trust that political leaders recognize the immense value RSO holds for Austria and the world, and I appeal to everyone to continue supporting this indispensable orchestra,” he stated.

Born in Munich, Poschner has led the Bruckner Orchestra Linz since 2017 and will remain in this role until 2027. Starting in the 2025/26 season, he will also take over as Chief Conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, and from the 2027/28 season, he will serve as Music Director of the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City. He is set to conduct RSO Vienna again this Thursday and plans to present his future vision for the orchestra in March. The tenure of the current RSO Chief Conductor, Marin Alsop, will conclude in the summer of 2025 after six years in the role.
