ORF Confirms Its 2027 Vienna New Year’s Concert Coverage

Sokhiev’s first concert in the annual series reaches television, radio and streaming.

A familiar musical event is taking shape as a major broadcast production. On 1 January 2027, the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert will begin at 11:15 a.m. local time, with Austrian viewers able to follow it on ORF 2, radio listeners on Ö1 and online viewers through ORF ON.

Tugan Sokhiev makes his debut as conductor of the annual concert. The musical programme is drawn from the Strauss family and their contemporaries, while the television edition adds elements created specifically for the screen. Two ballet sequences featuring the Vienna State Ballet have been filmed, and an interval film called The Sound of Science marks the tercentenary of Isaac Newton’s death.

ORF will also offer a behind-the-scenes feature. Such additions are a reminder that the event is both a live performance and an elaborate international television production, with the broadcaster coordinating images and sound for viewers who will never enter the Musikverein’s Golden Hall.

The orchestra and ORF renewed their arrangement in August 2026 for a further five years, covering the New Year’s and Summer Night concerts through 2032. ORF has carried the New Year’s Concert since 1959 and says its large orchestral broadcasts now circulate in more than 150 countries.

That number describes distribution, not a guarantee that every audience can use the same stream. Local rights, partner broadcasters and schedules can differ. For UK and other viewers outside Austria, the practical step is to check the service that has the relevant rights nearer the date.

What is already settled is the shape of the Austrian transmission: live television and radio, an ORF ON stream, Sokhiev’s first turn on the podium and a screen presentation built around the music rather than simply documenting it.
