Paris Conservatoire Students Block Campus over Conditions and Cultural Policy

Protesters cite building concerns, employment issues and student hardship as the conservatoire joins a wider education-sector mobilisation.

Students have blocked the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, joining a wider protest movement involving schools and higher-education institutions, Radio Classique reported on 13 October.

The action began on Monday at the conservatoire's Avenue Jean-Jaurès campus. In a statement circulated through the Luttes invisibles Facebook account, protesters cited the condition of the building, alleged asbestos in some rooms, staff reductions and the employment rights of accompanying pianists.

Their demands included access to €1 student meals for all conservatoire students. They also raised concerns about financial insecurity and the institution's possible relationship with Paris Sciences et Lettres.

The statement extended beyond campus issues to criticism of government cultural spending and abuses of power within the arts. At the time of Radio Classique's report, the conservatoire management and the relevant ministries had not publicly responded.
