Pires considers a return to recording, on her own terms
Belgais is the setting for the pianist’s next possible project.

Maria João Pires is working towards further recordings at Belgais, the arts centre she founded in Portugal. The prospect will interest collectors, but it comes with an important qualification: a new recording is not an announcement of renewed touring.
The pianist has been seen preparing at the centre, following comments in May that she might return to the studio. No repertoire, record label or release date has been confirmed for the prospective sessions.
Pires made those earlier remarks around the award of an honorary doctorate by the University of Évora. She declined the idea of a final comeback concert while describing a continuing involvement with teaching, workshops and occasional playing.
The distinction is characteristic of the circumstances now surrounding the news. Retirement from the public platform can be treated as a single decisive event, yet a musician’s working life rarely divides so neatly. The concentrated, adjustable conditions of recording permit choices that a fixed sequence of concert engagements may not.
Belgais, established in 1999, gives this possibility a particular setting. It is a place associated with musical education and close exchange, where the work can develop without immediately becoming a touring product.
For listeners, the temptation will be to anticipate a repertoire or imagine a late-career statement. Neither is justified by the information currently available. The value of the announcement lies in the possibility of hearing how Pires now approaches the instrument, rather than in any unconfirmed account of what she intends to record.
More detailed plans would make that prospect tangible. Until they emerge, the story remains one of an artist continuing to work, with the studio potentially offering a route back to her audience while leaving her decisions about public performance intact.
