Renovation and new buildings at the Salzburg Festival

The Salzburg Festival is embarking on a major construction project called ‘Festival District 2030’,  which includes a new visitor center and significant refurbishments. Located behind the Festival's existing theater, the new center will feature a glass pavilion with a bar, exhibition area, and a large hall funded by Swiss billionaire Hans-Peter Wild. The center aims to be a public space for engaging with the Festival beyond performance times.

Additionally, the festival's stage technology, dating back to the 1960s, is outdated, prompting the need for refurbishments costing 337,332,000 pounds, funded by Austria, Salzburg Province, and the city. A new 1000-square-meter hall will be built within the Mönchsberg for orchestra rehearsals and assembly work. This part of the project is expected to be completed by 2030, with the Festspielhaus closing in 2028-29 for renovations.
