‘Salabue, Matsuda’ Stradivari Violin Sells for $3.48 Million

Tarisio has announced the sale of the ‘Salabue, Matsuda’ Stradivari violin for $3.48 million at an auction in New York on November 14, 2024.

Crafted around 1666 during Stradivari’s early career, the violin features a back, ribs, and head showcasing his early work. Its front was remade in 1716 during Stradivari’s Golden Period, making it a rare and well-preserved piece. The instrument’s name derives from Count Cozio di Salabue, who recognized its dual-era craftsmanship.

The violin had been owned by renowned violinist Yoko Matsuda since 1970. A celebrated performer and chamber musician, Matsuda was a founding member of the award-winning Sequoia Quartet and recorded with Vanguard, Delos, and Nonesuch labels.
