Salzburg festival secures an exhibition-centre venue for renovation years
The temporary space will supplement the festival’s historic locations.

The Salzburg Festival will use the city’s exhibition centre as a temporary venue in 2029 and 2030 while the Grosses Festspielhaus undergoes renovation. Work on the principal festival building is scheduled from autumn 2028 to spring 2031.
The arrangement is designed to provide additional performance capacity during the construction period. It does not mean that the festival will abandon Salzburg’s old town: its established central venues will remain important to the programme, including opera performances.
Peter de Caluwe, who is due to begin as artistic director in October 2027, has presented the temporary location as an opportunity to consider different relationships between audiences, genres and artistic approaches. The venue therefore carries both a logistical purpose and a possible programming opportunity.
Those ambitions will need to be translated into practical decisions. A building designed for exhibitions presents different questions from a purpose-built concert hall, including acoustic treatment, sightlines, stage configuration and the experience of arriving at a performance. Detailed artistic plans will determine how the space is used.
For regular visitors, the most useful distinction is between the renovation timetable and the two seasons specifically named for the temporary venue. The building works extend across a longer period; the announcement identifies the exhibition centre’s role for 2029 and 2030.
The festival’s challenge will be to maintain continuity while making the additional location feel like a deliberate part of its artistic life. A temporary venue need not be artistically neutral, but its possibilities should not be confused with a programme that has already been announced.
For now, the decision resolves an important question of capacity and gives future planning a physical base. Audiences can expect more detail as the renovation years approach and individual productions and concerts are confirmed.
