Salzburg Festival Workshops Prepare for Six-Year Relocation

Festival production moves to temporary premises.

The Salzburg Festival will relocate its workshops to temporary premises in Liefering from 2027 as construction work proceeds in the festival district. The move will keep scenery and costume production operating during the redevelopment, with the interim facilities expected to remain in use until the end of 2033.

Scenery workshops will occupy the former Puma headquarters at Münchner Bundesstraße 119, where three halls provide approximately 6,400 square metres of space. A lease was signed in December 2025, and departments will move gradually during 2027.

The site will accommodate carpentry, metalworking, upholstery, scenic painting and assembly facilities, alongside technical planning and production offices. Around 80 year-round employees will work there, with additional space allocated to several administrative departments.

Adaptation work is already under way. Improvements include a lift connecting the ground-floor workshops with the upstairs upholstery department, ventilation and extraction systems, and modifications required for workplace safety.

A separate building at Peilsteinerstraße 5/7 will house costume-related departments. Providing approximately 2,600 square metres, it is scheduled for use from August 2027 through December 2033 and will accommodate around 90 year-round staff.

Facilities there will support tailoring, makeup, shoemaking, millinery, dyeing, costume painting and laundry, together with associated offices and staff rooms.

The temporary arrangements are intended to support the summer festivals from 2028 to 2033. The workshops also produce scenery for the Easter and Whitsun festivals and undertake work for external events, including Mozart Week, making continuity essential beyond the main summer season.
