Three-Armed Robot Conductor Debuts in Dresden

Dresden's Sinfoniker introduced MAiRA Pro S, a three-armed robot conductor, in two performances this weekend. The aim is not to replace human conductors, but to perform complex music that humans would find impossible. MAiRA uses three differently colored "batons" to lead different sections of the orchestra in cross rhythms.

The Sinfoniker, celebrating its 25th anniversary, performed a Robotersinfonie at Hellerau hall, featuring music by Andreas Gundlach. The piece, "Semiconductor’s Masterpiece," was written for 16 brass musicians and four percussionists, with each group playing wildly diverging time signatures. MAiRA’s precise coordination ensured the music flowed seamlessly.

Developed over two years by Markus Rindt and specialists from Technical University Dresden’s CeTI, MAiRA was trained like a human conductor, adopting increasingly complex movements. While not intended to replace humans, the robot's performance showcased how robots and humans can collaborate in artistic endeavors.
