Tobias Rempe is set to become the new artistic director of the Konzerthaus and Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Starting in summer 2025, he will assume the position from Sebastian Nordmann, who has led the institution since 2009. Tobias Rempe will be introduced at a press conference at the Konzerthaus on 22 May 2024.
With this new appointment, Joe Chialo, Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion, is following the recommendation of the advisory committee: "The development of new visions and strategies requires passion, courage, and a spirit of innovation. Tobias Rempe impressed us during the selection process. He stands for artistic excellence and strong ideas for the future. I would like to thank Sebastian Nordmann for his outstanding work. With Tobias Rempe, we are ushering in a new era for the Konzerthaus."
"It is an honor and a great pleasure to take over the management of the Konzerthaus Berlin. In recent years, the Konzerthaus and the Konzerthausorchester have embarked on a pioneering path of opening up and offering new programs. I am looking forward to working with Joana Mallwitz, the orchestra, Janina Paul, and the entire Konzerthaus team to continue the house's history and provide new artistic impetus," explains Tobias Rempe.
Joana Mallwitz, Chief Conductor of the Konzerthausorchester, also welcomes the new appointment: "I am very much looking forward to working together with Tobias Rempe, continuing the tried and tested but also experimenting with new ideas to enrich Berlin's cultural life further and consolidate classical music as an important part of Berlin. Tobias Rempe is a modern-minded concert organizer and cultural manager whose artistic approach fits perfectly with the direction of our house and the Konzerthausorchester."
Tobias Rempe, who began his musical career as a violinist and most recently worked as Artistic Manager and Managing Director of Ensemble Resonanz in Hamburg, brings with him an impressive combination of artistic vision and management expertise. Under his leadership, Ensemble Resonanz established itself as the resident ensemble of the Elbphilharmonie and an international model project for the communication of classical music in urban society. He opened the resonanzraum St. Pauli with the ensemble and developed numerous new formats with the musicians, characterizing him as a forward-looking cultural manager and concert organizer. In April 2024, the ensemble was awarded the Johannes Brahms Medal of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Tobias Rempe's appointment is subject to approval by the Berlin Senate.
Sebastian Nordmann will continue to lead the Konzerthaus until summer 2025 and will move to the Lucerne Festival as Artistic Director from 1 January 2026.
