Tobias Wolff's directorship of the Leipzig Opera ends in 2027

Leipzig will part ways with its current opera director, Tobias Wolff, as both sides have mutually agreed not to extend his contract, which expires on 31 July 2027. The decision was announced after recent negotiations regarding Wolff's potential contract extension. The city cited "different views on the future direction and development of the Leipzig Opera" as the reason behind the agreement to let the contract expire as planned. Despite this, Wolff has expressed pride in the work achieved so far and committed to working with his team until 2027 to fulfill the goals and measures already set. Wolff stated, "We still have around 30 new productions in the opera, Leipzig Ballet, and Musikalische Komödie ahead of us, with which we want to surprise and inspire our audience."

Dr. Skadi Jennicke, the city councillor for culture, thanked Wolff for his contributions, saying she looks forward to the coming seasons under his directorship and maintaining a good working relationship. Wolff, who was unanimously elected by the Leipzig City Council on 4 September 2019, assumed office on 1 August 2022 with a five-year contract.

The city has announced that the search for a successor will begin in the coming weeks, with a municipal selection committee composed of city council members and selected opera experts being formed to find the right candidate.

Meanwhile, the future of Gewandhaus Orchestra chief conductor Andris Nelsons remains uncertain. Nelsons’ contract was supposed to be extended in February 2024, but seven months have passed without any formal agreement. Reports suggest that Leipzig's mayor has concerns about the conductor's high costs and his perceived lack of effort in promoting both the orchestra and the city. The fate of Nelsons’ tenure at Gewandhaus remains unresolved.
