A violin signed by British composer Sir Edward Elgar will be auctioned on June 26, 2024, by Anderson and Garland in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Expected to fetch between £3,000 and £4,000, the violin belonged to Stan Smith, principal first violin of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) for forty years.

Smith, who also played with the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra (YSO) and participated in the premiere of Britten’s *War Requiem* in 1962, purchased the early 19th-century instrument by Thomas Perry and William Wilkinson in 1945. The original receipt is included. Additional violins and a French bow from Smith’s collection are also for sale.

The auction starts at 10am on June 26, 2024.
