A Russian Missile Transformed Into a Cello: The Original And Poetic Idea Of a Ukrainian Musician

Ukrainian musician and composer Roman Grygoriv has transformed a Russian missile that failed to explode into a cello-like musical instrument. He will perform with it at a charity concert in England on October 19. Trained in Vienna and Kiev, Grygoriv is known for his innovative compositions and collaborations with groups like the Vienna Vegetal Orchestra. The missile, a MRLS BM-27 Uragan, was salvaged in 2022 and reworked into a playable instrument.

Grygoriv describes playing the missile as a "ritual of purification" that transcends music. He debuted his composition Langsam - 9M27K on this instrument in June at Kiev's St. Andrew's Church. The upcoming performance at Blenheim Palace, alongside the Kyiv Camerata, aims to symbolize peace and hope, with proceeds supporting Ukrainian students in the UK and USA.
