"A Theme That Hurts Christians": Urban Opera Sparks Controversy in Toulouse

"Le Gardien du Temple - La Porte des Ténèbres," an urban opera by La Machine featuring giant machines, is set to take over Toulouse from October 25-27. However, Catholic and Protestant churches have condemned its dark, esoteric themes. Archbishop Guy de Kerimel called the show "satanic" and harmful to Christians. The Protestant Federation expressed concern about its "disturbing spiritual themes."

The show, featuring mythological figures like Asterion the Minotaur, Ariadne, and Lilith, was criticized for promoting darkness. Artists and city officials defended the performance, emphasizing its theatrical and cultural value. La Machine’s director, François Delarozière, called the backlash a "reaction from another time" and said the show simply draws on mythology and popular symbols.

This controversy reflects a broader cultural divide between religious communities and modern artistic expressions that explore darker themes. Archbishop Kerimel's dedication of the city to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on October 16 aimed to counterbalance the opera's message with hope.
