Alexandre Tharaud Speaks Out Against the Far Right

In an interview with France Musique, pianist Alexandre Tharaud revealed his frustration when several classical musicians declined his proposal to write a joint statement against the far-right threat. Despite bodies like Profedim and Les Forces musicales speaking out against the extreme right, few individual musicians have done so. Tharaud expressed his commitment on social media and discussed his concerns in the interview.

Following the National Assembly's dissolution, Tharaud contacted three prominent classical music figures to sign a joint statement, but they refused. He believes this reluctance stems from a fear of losing subsidies if a far-right MP is elected and a general reluctance among artists to speak out. Tharaud emphasized the danger posed by the far right, noting its historical antagonism toward dissenting artists.

Tharaud also criticized other political forces, expressing disillusionment with the left. He lamented the left's disarray, blaming it for the rise of the far right but remained hopeful for its recovery.
