Anti-War Russian Pianist Pavel Kushnir Dies in Custody

Pavel Kushnir, a 39-year-old Russian concert pianist and outspoken anti-war activist, has died in police custody following a hunger strike, as confirmed by his mother, Irina Levina. Kushnir, who was a graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and a soloist in several regional philharmonic orchestras, was arrested in May by FSB agents. He faced charges of public incitement to terrorist activities due to YouTube videos in which he criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kushnir's death occurred on July 28 in a pre-trial detention center in the Jewish Autonomous Region, a remote part of Russia's Far East. According to Levina, authorities informed her that they had attempted to keep him alive with IVs, but their efforts were insufficient. Details surrounding his death and the official cause remain unclear.

Despite having only five subscribers on his YouTube channel at the time of his arrest, Kushnir's case has drawn significant attention posthumously. Prominent musicians, including Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, and Simon Rattle, have paid tribute to his bravery and humanity in an open letter. They honored Kushnir for his moral courage in standing against the system, which ultimately led to his tragic end.

His body is expected to be repatriated to his native Tambov region soon.
