Bolshoi Theatre Ticket Price Hike Outrages Audience

The Bolshoi Theatre's recent pre-sale of tickets for September and October 2024 has sparked outrage among its audience due to a significant price increase. Many fans have voiced their frustration in Telegram chats dedicated to opera and ballet, with some claiming that comments questioning the price hike are being deleted from the theatre's official channel.

Regular attendee Natalia Beizerova highlighted the sharp rise in prices since Valery Gergiev became the theatre's general director. She noted that tickets for the historic stage's parterre, once priced at 15,000 rubles, now cost 50,000 rubles, while seats with limited visibility have surged from 3,000 to 8,000 rubles. Beizerova lamented that the steep prices are alienating loyal audiences who attend for the love of art.

Similarly, Roman Shilin, another Bolshoi patron, criticized the theatre's shift towards a business model under Gergiev's leadership, with ticket prices doubling and even tripling in some cases. Shilin expressed concern that the theatre, as a state-funded institution, is becoming inaccessible to average citizens.

Disgruntled spectators have organized a campaign to file complaints with various government agencies, arguing that the theatre's pricing is unjustifiably high and inconsistent with Russia's official inflation rate. They fear that the high prices will prevent ordinary families from experiencing Russian culture at the Bolshoi Theatre.
