What's Next for Esa-Pekka Salonen?

In an interview with media personality Cilla Benkö, Esa-Pekka Salonen, the renowned composer and conductor, shared his thoughts on his future. "I'm at a crossroads," Salonen said, reflecting on his upcoming transition. A year from now, for the first time in decades, Salonen will be a free agent. He added, "I'm figuring out what to do next, if anything."

Salonen's distinguished career as both a conductor and composer puts him in an enviable position to choose his next steps. As a conductor at the pinnacle of his field and a composer in high demand, he can attract multiple high-profile commissions for each new piece he writes.

With his departure as music director of the San Francisco Symphony next year—following a public break with the orchestra's board—Salonen could pursue virtually any opportunity he desires. "I'm not rushing into anything," he emphasized. "I just want to get my priorities right."

Previously, Salonen served as music director of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Since announcing his exit from San Francisco, he has already received numerous job offers. However, at the moment, he is not interested in leading another orchestra, though there are many other avenues he could explore to remain active in the music world.
