Baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle Suffers from Leukemia

The internationally acclaimed baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle is battling acute leukemia and will undergo a stem cell transplant. The Augsburg-born opera star recently shared the news of his diagnosis in an emotional Facebook post, announcing that he will temporarily withdraw from all performances to focus on his treatment. Kränzle, who previously overcame a bone marrow disease in 2015, is now facing this challenge for a second time.

"In the coming months, I will step away from all performances, but I am confident I will return soon, healthy," Kränzle wrote.

In his post, Kränzle urged people to register as stem cell donors, emphasizing how much easier and less painful the process is today compared to the past. "Nowadays, all you really have to do is donate blood. The stem cells are introduced into the bloodstream with the help of medication, so it's far less painful than it used to be," he explained. Kränzle encouraged healthy individuals between the ages of 18 and 55 to register with organizations like DKMS, stressing that while they may not be able to donate to him personally, they could still help save another life.

Johannes Martin Kränzle is widely regarded as one of the most important opera singers of his generation. The baritone has performed on many of the world's most prestigious stages, including the Bayreuth Festival, where he achieved great success as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. He has also performed at the Salzburg Festival, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and numerous renowned European opera houses.
