Vienna Increases Budget for 2025 Johann Strauss Year

Vienna is increasing its budget for the 2025 Strauss Year by two million euros, raising the total to 22 million euros (£18.3 million). This decision was announced by City Councillor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler, who attributed the need for additional funding to rising personnel and rental costs amid high inflation.

The festival year will celebrate the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss, the "King of Waltz." While artistic director Roland Geyer will present the program details on Friday, it is already clear that more resources are required to realize the planned projects fully. Kaup-Hasler noted that without the budget increase, only 75% of the projects could be executed, which poses a risk to the music sector, described as an "economic engine" with significant added value.

Kaup-Hasler also highlighted that the budget for the Strauss Year is notably lower than the 29.1 million euros allocated for the Mozart Year in 2006, which would equate to around 45 million euros today. She stated, "We are spending less than half of what we are spending on the Johann Strauss Year."

However, the ÖVP party expressed concerns about the lack of transparency regarding the budget. Culture spokesman Peter L. Eppinger criticized the supplementary act for being only three pages long and stated that it remains unclear how the additional funds will be allocated.
