Berlin Philharmonic Explores the Impact of Music on Pregnancy: Active Participation Shows Stronger Benefits

The Berlin Philharmonic is conducting a unique research project titled Creativity in Pregnancy, aimed at studying how music influences the well-being of expectant mothers and their babies. The initiative combines live chamber music concerts performed exclusively for pregnant women with interactive workshops that encourage participants to sing and move to music. A team of scientists accompanies the project, conducting non-invasive tests and surveys to monitor stress levels and physiological responses.
Measurements include cortisol levels in saliva, heart rate variability, and long-term stress indicators collected from hair samples. During childbirth, researchers also collect blood samples from the umbilical cord and placenta to analyze potential cellular effects, such as telomere length. The children’s development will be tracked over their first two years through regular questionnaires.
According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, early results are promising. Listening to live chamber music has been shown to lower cortisol and improve heart rate variability. However, the strongest effects were observed in workshops where the mothers actively engaged in music-making. Lead researcher Birgit Arabin emphasizes that the study is not just about observing fetal movement but about understanding subtle biological and chemical processes influenced by music. She also critiques the stress-focused approach often seen in traditional obstetric care, highlighting the need for greater appreciation of music’s positive impact.
The project is carried out in collaboration with medical professionals, scientists, and the Clara Angela Foundation. It also investigates whether the emotional and physiological benefits experienced by the mother can be passed on to the child through epigenetic mechanisms. Since March, the program has been offering free video recordings of the concerts and workshops to pregnant women across Germany who cannot attend in person, expanding the study to explore the effects of passive participation as well.
By focusing on the impact of live music rather than recorded tracks, the project marks an important step forward in understanding the role of the arts in prenatal health.
