Chief Conductor Christopoulos Extends Contract at Graz Opera Until 2027/28 Season

Vassilis Christopoulos, Chief Conductor of Graz Opera, will continue his tenure at the house on Opernring until the end of the 2027/28 season. His contract has been extended for another three years, a decision described as “wonderful news” by Intendant Ulrich Lenz. The announcement was made on Friday in the opera’s Mirror Hall, where Lenz was joined by the Munich-born Greek conductor. Christopoulos expressed his enthusiasm, stating that he “could not imagine a better venue” to work in.

“He Has Everything a Great Conductor Needs”

Lenz spoke highly of Christopoulos, calling his appointment “an absolute stroke of luck” for the opera. “In every aspect, one can see how well the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra harmonises with him and how much he has helped it grow,” he said. Lenz further praised Christopoulos for his well-rounded approach: “Some conductors are excellent organisers, while others focus purely on the orchestra. He brings everything together.”

Christopoulos initially signed a contract with an option for extension, and he will now remain in Graz until the summer of 2028—coinciding with the duration of Lenz’s contract.

“A Deep Connection with the Orchestra”

Christopoulos, in turn, expressed his gratitude for Lenz’s support, saying he felt fortunate to have an Intendant who not only cares about the orchestra’s development but also encourages him in “unconventional projects.” He emphasised the trust within the institution: “A conductor’s role can be difficult when facing resistance, but I don’t feel that here at all. When musicians choose to follow, to be inspired and moved, conducting is the most beautiful profession in the world. Without that chemistry, it becomes meaningless—you simply move your arms, and they play as they please.”

He praised the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra for its unwavering commitment: “Whether it’s opera, musicals, or concerts, they always give 100%, maintaining an extraordinary level of consistency—something I have rarely encountered.”

When asked if he had considered other opportunities, Christopoulos replied, “I have only been here for a season and a half—I never intended to use this position as a stepping stone.”
