Chung Myung-whun Likely to Lead KBS Symphony Orchestra

Chung Myung-whun is reportedly in final discussions to become the next music director of the KBS Symphony Orchestra, as reported by The Korea Herald. This potential appointment marks his return to leading a Korean orchestra after nine years, following his previous roles with the Radio France Philharmonic and the Seoul Philharmonic until 2015.

Chung's history with the KBS Symphony Orchestra includes a stint as principal conductor in 1998, though his tenure was cut short due to internal conflicts. In 2022, he was honored as the orchestra's first "honorary laureate" conductor, continuing to collaborate on regular concerts such as the "Masters Series."

The official announcement of Chung's appointment is anticipated in August or September. Recently, he has been active in Korea, taking on the role of general director for Busan's municipal performance venues.

Chung and the KBS Symphony Orchestra are scheduled to perform Schubert’s "Unfinished Symphony" and Rossini’s "Stabat Mater" on July 12 at Lotte Concert Hall, with tickets for the event selling out quickly.

Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen's term as the current music director is set to conclude this year, and Chung appears poised to succeed him. Known internationally, Chung initially gained renown as a pianist before transitioning to a celebrated conductor, with notable engagements including the Paris Bastille Opera and performances with prestigious orchestras such as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics.
