Contemporary Opera Works Hard To Sell

The contemporary opera Endgame will be performed on October 25 at the Vienna State Opera. Endgame revolves around four characters living in a hostile, nearly uninhabitable landscape. Clov serves Hamm, who is confined to a wheelchair, while Hamm's parents, Nell and Nagg, live in garbage cans after losing their legs in a cycling accident. The four characters engage in an endless cycle of repetition and reminiscence, alternating between bullying, cajoling, storytelling, cursing, and interrupting one another.
While operas like Rigoletto and The Tales of Hoffmann easily fill the house at the New York Metropolitan Opera, modern works face significant challenges. For instance, Tesori's Ground opera, which premiered in 2023, has seen shockingly low attendance. A photo taken at the MET during an interval starkly illustrates this struggle.
Modern operas simply cannot compete with the enduring popularity of composers like Verdi, Puccini, and Offenbach. No opera house can sustain such low attendance in the long term.
