Increase in Bolshoi Theatre Ticket Prices Explained as a Measure Against Resellers

In response to audience complaints about rising ticket prices at the Bolshoi Theatre, the Russian Ministry of Culture has issued a statement, widely circulated on Telegram. The response, signed by E.E. Isaakyan, Deputy Director of the Department for State Support of Art and Folk Art, emphasized that the price adjustments were made in coordination with the theatre's management.

For many years, ticket prices at the Bolshoi had remained unchanged, averaging 4,000 rubles. However, this created an opportunity for resellers to buy tickets in bulk and sell them at inflated prices. As a result, tickets would sell out quickly at the box office but remain available on reseller websites, causing confusion and frustration among patrons.

To address this issue, the Bolshoi Theatre revised its pricing policy in December 2023, particularly for high-demand performances. The maximum ticket price for the most popular shows on the Historical Stage is now set at 40,000 rubles, with the minimum price remaining at 4,000 rubles. Ticket prices can also fluctuate under the theatre's dynamic pricing system, depending on availability.

ClassicalMusicNews.Ru found that tickets for a premiere of Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty on September 19, 2024, were selling for 45,000 rubles, exceeding the stated maximum price. This discrepancy likely reflects the dynamic pricing system.

Despite price increases for select performances, most of the Bolshoi's events remain affordable. Tickets for concerts in the Beethoven Hall range from 500 to 1,500 rubles, while prices for performances at the Chamber Stage do not exceed 4,000 rubles.

The Ministry concluded that these changes have reduced reseller activity, with tickets now available for purchase both at the box office and on the theatre's official website.
