Leipzig Opera Director Search Fails as Nelsons Expected to Renew Contract

According to a report by BackstageClassical on 10 May 2025, the Leipzig Opera’s search for a new general director has failed, with the selection process to be restarted due to the lack of a suitable candidate. Current director Tobias Wolff, who has declined to renew his contract due to differences in artistic direction, is set to take over at the Staatstheater Braunschweig in 2027.

In the interim, administrative director Lydia Schubert and Leipzig’s Deputy Mayor for Culture, Skadi Jennicke, will jointly oversee planning for upcoming seasons.

Meanwhile, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig’s chief conductor, Andris Nelsons, whose contract runs through 2027, is expected to renew his tenure. Although earlier discussions raised political concerns regarding the orchestra’s finances, recent reports suggest a consensus has been reached between the city and the orchestra leadership to extend Nelsons’ appointment.

In related news, the orchestra’s managing director Andreas Schulz will retire in 2028, prompting the search for his successor.
