Mozart's Repertoire Catalogue Updated After 60 Years of Research

For over 160 years, the Köchel Catalogue has provided an authoritative overview of the musical works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The first edition of this catalogue was published in 1862 by Ludwig Ritter von Köchel through Breitkopf & Härtel, setting a standard for catalogues of other composers' works. To incorporate the growing body of knowledge about Mozart's oeuvre, several new editions followed, the last one being in 1964. However, the current version of the Köchel Catalogue has become outdated, unable to meet the demand for a compact and reliable presentation of information about Mozart.

After decades of meticulous work by Breitkopf & Härtel and the International Mozarteum Foundation, a completely new edition of the Köchel Catalogue will be presented in mid-September. This presentation will also feature a newly discovered Mozart piece, unearthed during the compilation of the new edition.

The International Mozarteum Foundation, the leading institution dedicated to preserving and disseminating Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's cultural heritage, played a crucial role in this project. Founded in 1880 by citizens of Salzburg, the foundation traces its roots back to the "Dom-Musik-Verein und Mozarteum" of 1841. It was supported by Mozart's widow Constanze and his sons, Carl Thomas and Franz Xaver Wolfgang, who donated a significant portion of Mozart's personal memorabilia. Today, the foundation holds the world's largest collection of original letters, portraits, and instruments belonging to the Mozart family, continuing its mission to provide all people and generations with access to Mozart's music, life, and legacy.
