Replica of Mozart’s Travel Clavichord to Be Exhibited in Augsburg

1763: The Mozart Family’s Grand Tour of Western Europe

In 1763, Leopold Mozart set out from Salzburg with his family on a three-year journey across Western Europe to showcase the musical genius of his son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. To ensure that Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl could continue their practice while traveling, Leopold purchased a small travel clavichord in Augsburg from renowned instrument maker Johann Andreas Stein.

A Faithful Replica Now in Leopold Mozart Haus

The original instrument is preserved in the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest. Now, the Leopold Mozart Haus in Augsburg welcomes a meticulously crafted replica. This project was initiated by the German Mozart Society (DMG) and made possible with support from Stadtsparkasse Augsburg and its “Mozartstadt Augsburg” foundation. The instrument was built by Viennese instrument maker Albrecht Czernin.

Unveiling Event and Special Exhibition

On March 25, the travel clavichord will officially arrive in Augsburg. On March 26, it will make its debut at the “Mittwoch mit Mozart” (“Wednesday with Mozart”) concert series, organized by the DMG. The instrument will be played by DMG President Prof. Christoph Hammer, with Mag. Alfons Huber (Vienna) providing historical insights.

Additionally, the museum will open a special exhibition, “Anna Maria Mozart,” exploring the life and legacy of Mozart’s mother.
