Senate Considers Freezing Komische Oper Construction Due to High Costs

The Red City Hall is considering halting the construction of the Komische Oper on Behrenstraße due to budget constraints. Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) may freeze the project, despite the new artistic directors calling such a move "political suicide."Sources suggest the CDU/SPD coalition might invest only 16 million euros in security and preparatory work, potentially saving 50 million euros annually. This plan isn't officially confirmed.

If halted, the Komische Oper could become derelict between Behrenstraße and Unter den Linden, near the Russian embassy. Some façade panels and outdated stage technology have already been removed, and the listed inventory secured and stored.The controversial renovation, estimated to cost at least 478 million euros, is being reconsidered. A previous plan included a hotel in the inner courtyard, which faced criticism from a citizens' alliance.

The cultural administration is seeking 8 to 12 percent savings. Martin Pallgen, spokesman for the Building Senate, said funds are allocated for dismantling and remediation, expected to be completed by year-end. Parliament will decide on further actions.

Last year, the Komische Oper had an 86 percent occupancy rate, attracting 166,679 visitors. On average, 80 percent of each ticket was subsidized with 272 euros. The ensemble is currently performing at the Schillertheater in Charlottenburg.
