Soprano Erika Baikoff has been denied the right to settle in the UK after her visa application was rejected due to insufficient time spent in Britain. The US-Russian singer, who received her visa in 2019, explained that her international opera career requires frequent travel. Baikoff plans to challenge the decision, citing the pandemic's impact on UK opportunities. Graduating from the Guildhall School of Music in 2018, she utilized a global talent visa intended for internationally recognized artists. Critics argue the policy unfairly penalizes artists, unlike academics. Baikoff has won a position at the Metropolitan Opera’s young artist program and will debut with the London Symphony Orchestra and Houston Grand Opera this season.
