Strike Cancels Carlo Felice Opera Season Opener

The Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa has canceled the April 6 premiere of Richard Strauss’s Die Liebe der Danae, which was set to open the theatre’s spring season. The cancellation is due to a strike called by the Slc-Cgil and Snater unions.

Although a successful dress rehearsal took place the evening before, the strike forced the theatre’s management to call off the performance. In a statement, the theatre acknowledged the professionalism of its staff but noted that the show could not proceed without their full participation.

The theatre’s box office is currently contacting ticket holders to offer alternative dates—April 9, 13, and 16—or to arrange refunds. The strike, reportedly just the beginning of wider union action, is expected to affect all premieres through the end of the season. The demands include better pay negotiations, improved staffing, and a more sustainable work structure.

Following other recent cultural setbacks in Genoa, the cancellation adds to concerns over the city’s cultural climate.
