The Paris Opera Suspends Partnership With Maîtrise Des Hauts-De-Seine Due to Sexual Harassment Case

The Paris Opera has suspended its partnership with the Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine following allegations of sexual and moral harassment against its director, Gaël Darchen. Darchen, who denies the accusations, is under investigation by the Nanterre public prosecutor's office after five women filed complaints, including one of sexual assault. Testimonies from former students accuse Darchen of inappropriate behavior, such as physical contact and fostering a "sectarian" atmosphere, leading some students to experience depression and burnout.

Founded in 1985, the Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine has been the children's choir for the Paris Opera since 1995. Due to the suspension, the choir will not participate in the November production of The Magic Flute at the Opéra Bastille, with a German choir replacing them. However, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (TCE) will continue its collaboration with the Maîtrise for upcoming productions, but without Darchen.

In response to the allegations, the Maîtrise has removed Darchen, initiated an internal audit, and set up a hotline for complaints. The choir's leadership remains committed to preparing for future performances, maintaining that their measures, such as banning mobile phones during tours, are appropriate and accepted by choristers and parents.
